It’s Richard’s and Dan’s birthdays today.
Last week, I asked Richard what he was doing for his birthday. He responded, “probably nothing.”
Last night, I asked Dan what he was doing for his birthday. He responded, “probably nothing.”
Ellen recently tried to let hers pass unacknowledged.
What’s up with all the anti-birthday shenanigans? I love my birthday! It’s the one day of the year that I do whatever I want with indignant birthday justification. I’m not robbing banks or slapping rude people. I keep all my festivities legal and aligned with social norms. I get an eggnog latte. I take the day off from work. I hang with friends. I shave my head. I make and execute my plan.
I’ve already started imagining what I might do this year. It’s not until December 19th but I’m a planner. *On the day* has always been important to me too. And this year falls on a Friday. I need to manage my expectations. Some of my birthday crew will be on their own holiday party circuit. I want to be flexible and respectful of their demanding schedules. After all, I requested their presence in a big way for last year’s 50th. They left Chicago’s twinkling light hoopla to celebrate me. And let’s be honest, there is no topping last year’s dinner on Cancun’s beach in a private Ritz cabana. THAT is as good as it gets.
What am I doing for my birthday…six months away? Something! Something low key but definitely something.
