Here’s what I love about Emma Thompson: She is a great actor. She is a great writer. She hates high heels. And she likes drinking martinis.
At the Golden Globes on Sunday, she was accused of being a little boozy. She introduced the nominees for best screenplay with her high heels off and her drink on. It was marvelous!
She had forewarned the world about her heel disdain in her award acceptance at the National Board of Review award ceremony last week.
EMMA’s speech conclusion: “I’ve taken my heels off as a feminist statement, really, because why do we wear them? They’re so painful.” She added, “I’m so comfortable now.”
She received an award for her work in Saving Mr. Banks. The honor was presented by Meryl Streep. They both had some great moments in their speeches that blasted two foes of women, Walt Disney and menopause.
MERYL’S speech comparison between her and Emma: “… she’s also a rabid, man eating feminist, like I am.”
Love it! As an observer, it seems like this moment in entertainment history is celebrating women for their talent not necessarily their looks. Golden Globe Award Winner Amy Poehler uses her own age to set up a joke; “42 year old mother of two.”
The comedy duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler slam dunked at the Golden Globes on Sunday. They even made a joke about women aging in Hollywood…
“Meryl Streep is so brilliant in August: Osage County, proving that there are still great parts in Hollywood for Meryl Streeps over 60.”
Are we moving into a new time in entertainment where the ladies are stepping up and out in protest?
EMMA’s acceptance speech: “Normally on occasions like this I like to complain, loudly and at length, about the dearth of roles for women, but actually this year they seem to have behaved like buses in London, where you wait for hours for the right one, and then suddenly seventeen come along at once. And so it has been. You know, Meryl and Julia and Octavia and Lea and the Kates, both Blanchett and Winslet, it’s been an extraordinary year for women’s roles.”
Yes, all these ladies are beautiful but what stands out more is their talent! I hope we see more, smart TV and films that utilize the talented pool of actresses.
