Anchored to a kid

I’m a scheduler and that’s helpful with Grace in town.  I’ve been working my life around theatre camp.  Camp is 9am-3pm.  Bedtime is 9pm.  It’s getting from here to there that is tricky especially because I don’t have a car.

In theory, the perfect scenario is out of the house by 8:15am.  We walk to the Red Line train… 6 blocks.  I drop Grace at theatre camp.  I pick up a Divvy bike. I bike to the office and work until 2:30pm.  I bike back to the Royal George Theatre.  It works when all the pedals fall into place. The reality is a Divvy port might not have a bike so I’ll cab or bus it.  Or yesterday, I worked out with Josh from 7am-8am and then woke Grace up.  We took a cab so not be late for camp.

In my real life, I don’t overly plot out my commute because it’s just me.  With a kid, I try to figure out what will be easiest, timing-wise.  Initially, I was concerned about the walking.  I’m not so much anymore.  Grace enjoys helping me get my steps in.  Yesterday, at her request, we walked down the 20 stories.  We made it to the eighth floor.  And at her request, we took the elevator the rest of the way.

After camp yesterday, we went to Navy Pier.  Our objectives was to see Cirque Shanghai’s new show WARRIORS.  We were early.  Instead of schlepping from camp to home to Pier, I like to just always be en route.  We rode the Red Line to the 66 Bus to arrive a couple hours early.

I’m learning how to manage a 7 1/2 year old.  She wanted to ride a ride.  I wanted to get some steps in.  The negotiation was we would walk the mile long pier.  And then she could pick one ride of her choice.  There also had to be a please and thank you and absolutely no mention of a second ride.  We shook on it.

We walked down to the end of the pier looking at the flowers, stained glass museum and this very big anchor.  When we got back to the arcade area, thankfully she selected the swings. (I’m losing my interest in ferris wheels.  They are starting to give me the heebie jeebies.)  After getting our swing on, we met up with Scooby and Bill for drinks and the show… which was amazing!  Review coming soon.
