Nip it in the bud

get-attachmentWhen getting fit, everybody looks for signs it’s happening.  We want to see indicators that we are moving from sloth to athlete.  I got mine at 4am the other day.  I woke up to an itchy foot.   The bottom of my right foot was a tingly sensation.  Upon examination, I found the culprit.  In the middle of my foot is a blister.  It’s the size of a pea.  My best google guess is  Athlete’s Foot.  Annoying.  Yet, not devastating.  And really of all the gross fungal stuff that could sprout on my body, Athlete’s Foot has the best name.

I’m a nip-it-in-the-bud kind of gal.  I don’t wait for something to get worse before I act on it.  On most things, I’m quick to go into fix mode.  Whether it’s a physical ailment or relational conflict, I want to confront it.  I don’t like anything to fester into something unmanageable.

By chance, I saw about thirty minutes of the movie “Bridesmaids.” It was my second exposure. Originally, I thought there were funny elements to the movie.  But I didn’t love it.  I definitely didn’t think Oscar nominated movie.  I barely liked it.  Initially, I thought it was because Melissa McCarthy plays a dumpy fat girl.  I recognize I have a bias against negative portrayals of good size people. Yet, I don’t think that’s the real issue for me this time.

When I was watching the mini rerun, I realized it was the underlying plot I didn’t care for.  I don’t appreciate comedy based on someone’s decline into misery.  I like Kirsten Wiig too much to laugh at her suffering.  At each mishap, I wanted her to deal with her baggage.  Not avoid it, ignore it or cover it up.  Fix it!  And certainly don’t let your sh#t ruin someone’s wedding.

I know bad stuff doesn’t always go away with a can of Tinactin, clorox wipes and flip flops.  Still, we need to assess the situation, figure out what ails us and try to cure it before it spreads to overwhelming levels.

Heal!
